Le violoncelliste (et compositeur) suisse Thomas Demenga (*1954) est une sorte d’inclassable artiste de la scène mondiale ; à la fois à l’aise dans la création contemporaine la plus échevelée – on lui doit maints enregistrements de Cage, Holliger, Messiaen, Yun, Pärt, Zimmermann etc. – et dans le répertoire classique de Bach à Schubert, de Vivaldi à Mendelssohn, de Dvořák à Tchaikovsky. Voici sa lecture toute nouvelle des Suites de Bach, qu’il nous donne dans une immense liberté quasi-improvisatrice, même s’il respecte le texte à la lettre : c’est dans les accents, les rubatos, les articulations et les phrasés qu’il laisse libre cours à sa fantaisie, comme si l’encre de ces chefs-d’œuvre n’était pas encore sèche. On est assez loin de certaines lectures plus « propres », plus « classiques », plus « léchées » de certains grands prédécesseurs et non des moindres. Mais en réalité cette musique est suffisamment riche et ample pour s’offrir sous mille éclairages différents sans jamais rien perdre de sa superbe. Demenga, un disciple de Rostropovitch, Antonio Janigro et Leonard Rose, entre ici dans une sorte de panthéon où il n’a certes pas à pâlir des comparaisons quelles qu’elles soient. Le diapason délibérément assez bas qu’il a choisi offre une autre profondeur et une teinte plus sombre, assez inhabituelle, à ses lectures. © SM/Qobuz
