This recording presents Bach’s St John Passion sung in English, with a chorus of more than a hundred singers, accompanied by an ensemble playing baroque instruments. On one hand this cannot be described as an ‘authentic’ performance, if that means a performance close to what Bach’s contemporaries would have heard, even though the Bach Camerata does play on period instruments, the alto voice is sung by a countertenor, the pitch is that of the Kammerton in Bach’s times – i.e. the Chamber pitch, roughly a semitone below modern concert pitch – and the choir, in the present case the Crouch End Festival Choir, would be about the same strength. But… it would not have been sung in English back in 1727, and nowhere near to that date. The first documented performance of the St John Passion sung in English seems to be a century and a half later, 22 March 1872, in the Hanover Square Rooms in London, but… it was certainly not on period instruments, nor in the Kammerton, etc. Thus this recording, in a way, blends both historically informed performances: that of Bach’s time for the musicians and singers, that of the middle Victorian era for the language. A welcome, if curious, addition to the ample discography of that marvellous work, with a change in tone colour brought about by the change of language that will highlight the Biblical drama in a quite different manner. © SM/Qobuz
