Une version à petit effectif, choral comme instrumental puisqu’il est seulement constitué de 9 chanteurs (dont les solistes), une douzaine de cordes, des bois par deux, ainsi que orgue, clavecin, théorbe mais surtout un contrebasson qui vient rehausser la palette sonore. L’interprétation déçoit autant qu’elle peut captiver. On commence par applaudir à la précision de l’exécution. Dès la saisissante marche de l’ouverture de l’œuvre, pour prendre un exemple, l’oreille est captée par la caractérisation de la formation orchestrale lorsque Minkowski souligne avec pertinence le martèlement des basses comme pour mieux annoncer le calvaire et le supplice du Christ tandis que les violons égrènent la longue série des doubles croches. Même les chorals — qui sont avant tout, dans les Passions de Bach, une ponctuation liturgique venant interrompre l’action dramatique pour exprimer la contrition, l'espérance ou la joie du chrétien face au message divin — sont interprétés dans cette même optique dramaturgique : mais celle-ci leur est-elle vraiment nécessaire ? En revanche, la portée spirituelle de la musique de Bach ne se satisfait pas d’une exécution seulement bien maîtrisée et qui en jette. Il y faut un autre souffle, une autre dimension émotionnelle qui soit à la hauteur de la profondeur mystique de la musique. Trop d’extériorisation théâtrale, de tempos rapides ne laissent pas à l'émotion suffisamment de place pour s'exprimer et toucher. On ressent à divers degrés cette absence d'âme chez les chanteurs — que les 9 chantent en chœur ou séparément —, exception faite, dans l'ensemble, pour l’Evangéliste (Lothar Odinius) qui s’immerge avec expressivité dans sa narration biblique, ainsi que Christian Immler (Jésus) et l’alto Delphine Galou dans le fameux « Es ist vollbracht » ; les autres peinent à vivre leur chant avec la gravité qu’impose le texte — particulièrement le contreténor David Hansen qui joue dans un registre plus proche du salon que du divin. Plus intellectuelle qu'habitée, l'interprétation de Marc Minkowski ne les aide pas non plus à y parvenir. © Qobuz (GG)

Descriptif de l'album

Une version à petit effectif, choral comme instrumental puisqu’il est seulement constitué de 9 chanteurs (dont les solistes), une douzaine de cordes, des bois par deux, ainsi que orgue, clavecin, théorbe mais surtout un contrebasson qui vient rehausser la palette sonore. L’interprétation déçoit autant qu’elle peut captiver. On commence par applaudir à la précision de l’exécution. Dès la saisissante marche de l’ouverture de l’œuvre, pour prendre un exemple, l’oreille est captée par la caractérisation de la formation orchestrale lorsque Minkowski souligne avec pertinence le martèlement des basses comme pour mieux annoncer le calvaire et le supplice du Christ tandis que les violons égrènent la longue série des doubles croches. Même les chorals — qui sont avant tout, dans les Passions de Bach, une ponctuation liturgique venant interrompre l’action dramatique pour exprimer la contrition, l'espérance ou la joie du chrétien face au message divin — sont interprétés dans cette même optique dramaturgique : mais celle-ci leur est-elle vraiment nécessaire ? En revanche, la portée spirituelle de la musique de Bach ne se satisfait pas d’une exécution seulement bien maîtrisée et qui en jette. Il y faut un autre souffle, une autre dimension émotionnelle qui soit à la hauteur de la profondeur mystique de la musique. Trop d’extériorisation théâtrale, de tempos rapides ne laissent pas à l'émotion suffisamment de place pour s'exprimer et toucher. On ressent à divers degrés cette absence d'âme chez les chanteurs — que les 9 chantent en chœur ou séparément —, exception faite, dans l'ensemble, pour l’Evangéliste (Lothar Odinius) qui s’immerge avec expressivité dans sa narration biblique, ainsi que Christian Immler (Jésus) et l’alto Delphine Galou dans le fameux « Es ist vollbracht » ; les autres peinent à vivre leur chant avec la gravité qu’impose le texte — particulièrement le contreténor David Hansen qui joue dans un registre plus proche du salon que du divin. Wilhelm Kempff, le plus humain des pianistes

Artiste d’un autre temps, Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) croyait à l’inspiration : il était entré en musique comme on entre en religion, avec une ferveur respectueuse pour les vieux maîtres qu’il servait. Avec son toucher de velours, son sens du phrasé et sa diction de conteur, l’art de Wilhelm Kempff était celui d’un rêveur éveillé, mi-poète, mi-devin, dans une époque où l’expression du sentiment primait sur tout. Il a souvent enregistré à plusieurs reprises ses compositeurs préférés, en particulier son dieu Beethoven, avec lequel on l’a si souvent identifié, laissant trois intégrales des sonates au fur et à mesure de sa propre maturation et de l’évolution des techniques d’enregistrement.

Herbert von Karajan et les grands maîtres du classique

Trente ans après sa mort, l’Autrichien Herbert von Karajan (Salzbourg 1908 - Anif 1989) incarne toujours la figure du chef d’orchestre. À la tête de l’orchestre philharmonique de Berlin, qu’il a élevé au rang de marque mondiale pendant presque trente-cinq ans (1955-1989), il a méthodiquement réenregistré le cœur de son répertoire : Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Verdi, Wagner, Strauss…
