1950 à 1990, voilà l’impressionnante étendue de la carrière de la soprano australienne Joan Sutherland (1926 – 2010). Dès 1959 elle faisait ses débuts triomphants à Londres dans Lucia (après s’y être taillé un sérieux succès comme Reine de la nuit quelques années auparavant), ce qui la plaça d’emblée dans le cercle des plus grandes cantatrices « à l’italienne » ; car elle avait commencé sa jeune carrière en s’orientant plutôt vers la catégorie de soprano dramatique wagnérienne, mais son mari Richard Bonynge la persuada rapidement que sa voix se prêtait bien mieux aux émissions plus légères du bel canto, du répertoire baroque et des grandes opérettes. Oui, elle s’est frotté aux rôles plus dramatiques, mais seulement au disque, jamais sur scène. Dès 1959, la firme Decca lui signa un pont en or, de sorte qu’elle enregistra pour le prestigieux label jusqu’à la tout fin de sa carrière en 1990. Ce sont ces quelque vingt heures d’enregistrements en studio (on le précise, puisqu’il existe aussi des brouettes d’enregistrements de concert) pour Decca qui nous sont ici proposés. On va de Haendel à la comédie musicale états-unienne, en passant par l’incontournable Donizetti dont Sutherland fut la championne, Offenbach, Massenet et cent autres sur ces vingt-trois CD ; la voix de la star reste éclatante, émouvante et somptueuse du début à la fin, remarquable longévité sans doute due à une technique impeccable et aussi le soutien artistique et humain de Bonynge, qui dirige (et accompagne au piano, parfois) bon nombre de ces enregistrements. © SM/Qobuz

1950 à 1990, voilà l’impressionnante étendue de la carrière de la soprano australienne Joan Sutherland (1926 – 2010). Dès 1959 elle faisait ses débuts triomphants à Londres dans Lucia (après s’y être taillé un sérieux succès comme Reine de la nuit quelques années auparavant), ce qui la plaça d’emblée dans le cercle des plus grandes cantatrices « à l’italienne » ; car elle avait commencé sa jeune carrière en s’orientant plutôt vers la catégorie de soprano dramatique wagnérienne, mais son mari Richard Bonynge la persuada rapidement que sa voix se prêtait bien mieux aux émissions plus légères du bel canto, du répertoire baroque et des grandes opérettes. Oui, elle s’est frotté aux rôles plus dramatiques, mais seulement au disque, jamais sur scène. Dès 1959, la firme Decca lui signa un pont en or, de sorte qu’elle enregistra pour le prestigieux label jusqu’à la tout fin de sa carrière en 1990. Ce sont ces quelque vingt heures d’enregistrements en studio (on le précise, puisqu’il existe aussi des brouettes d’enregistrements de concert) pour Decca qui nous sont ici proposés. On va de Haendel à la comédie musicale états-unienne, en passant par l’incontournable Donizetti dont Sutherland fut la championne, Offenbach, Massenet et cent autres sur ces vingt-trois CD ; la voix de la star reste éclatante, émouvante et somptueuse du début à la fin, remarquable longévité sans doute due à une technique impeccable et aussi le soutien artistique et humain de Bonynge, qui dirige (et accompagne au piano, parfois) bon nombre de ces enregistrements. © SM/Qobuz
