Sur la pochette, un bouc photographié en contre-plongée, sorte de revendication du cliché « satanique » (le bouc qui va être sacrifié au Malin) comme symbole du metal : Slipknot entend défier le metal.

Comme son prédécesseur, Iowa s’ouvre avec une plage courte, « (515) », tapis sonore à relents industriels sur quoi planent des cris effroyables (un homme que l’on torture ? un fou ?) et qui sert d’introduction à un « People = Shit » démarrant dans un vacarme flirtant avec le grind/death. Après un premier album lourd et sauvage, Slipknot montre qu’il n’a pas l’intention modérer le ton. Et le prouve d’emblée avec un son tout aussi brutal et direct et un refrain d’une simplicité aux airs de slogan misanthrope à faire scander à la foule : « People equal shit » (« Les gens, c’est de la merde »). Si Corey Taylor est un parolier médiocre, il démontre d’une chanson à l’autre qu’il est en revanche l’un des vocalistes les plus féroces de la scène metal de l'époque : ses aboiements ont quelque chose d’un Max Cavalera à trois poumons qui aurait raboté ses cordes vocales à la laine de verre.

Comme son prédécesseur, Iowa dure plus d’une heure et s’avère un album puissant, massif. Mélange d’influences variées – rap metal, death metal, hardcore et même grind – l’album montre un groupe qui assène sa musique à coups de marteau. Bien sûr, les singles se distinguent : le ravageur « Heretic Song » (certainement l’un des tout meilleurs titres du groupe), « My Plague » ou le popisant et nerveux « Left Behind ». Mais l’album ne manque pas de titres plus surprenants. Notamment quand, tenant en bride sa fureur de fauve écumant, Slipknot livre des pièces « ambiantes » insanes : « Gently » (dont une première version figurait sur la démo de 1997 Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat.), morceau ténébreux et étouffant en plein milieu de l’album, où les guitares se font plus subtiles et « ornementales » et qui rappelle « Daddy » de Korn ; et « Iowa », final apocalyptique de 15 minutes qui ne ressemble à rien d’autre dans le metal américain, sombre, flippant – parfait.

Un an après le premier album de Linkin Park ([Hybryd Theory]), Slipknot représente la voie de la radicalisation du néo metal (avec des influences tirées du metal extrême). De fait, il n’y aura plus rien à faire de neuf dans le genre après, les premiers ayant tiré le genre dans une direction « radio-diffusable » et les seconds vers une brutalité accusée. Toxicity de System of a Down, cette même année, enfonce le clou : le néo-metal est mort.

Le succès d’Iowa reste surprenant, au regard de sa radicalité – le disque étant l’un des plus brutaux du metal américain depuis Reign in Blood de Slayer (1986). Il se classe en effet n°1 au Royaume-Uni, n°3 aux Etats-Unis et n°7 en France. C’est sombre. Et frénétique. Et dense. Quelque chose de grand-guignolesque et menaçant à la fois tant ces neuf-là semblent secoués du chapeau. Le metal américain à son meilleur.
