En 2009, Brian Burton alias Danger Mouse est au top de la pop. Il vient de produire les disques de Damon Albarn et Beck, il vient de cartonner avec CeeLo Green en montant Gnarls Barkley, il a signé pour produire le prochain album de U2… Mais il ressent l’envie d’une nouvelle collaboration. Ce sera Broken Bells, avec James Mercer, le chanteur de The Shins, un groupe d’indie rock du Nouveau-Mexique. Plutôt low profile pour Danger Mouse, le projet obtient pourtant le succès dès le premier titre, le single The High Road, suivi d’un premier album qui met tout le monde d’accord.
Depuis, le duo reconnecte dès que c’est possible, avec After the Disco en 2014, et en 2022 ce Into the Blue qui reprend cette exploration de l’American Songbook, comme un exercice de style qui sauterait d’une époque à l’autre, pop, soul, synthpop, des années 60 aux années 80. C’est ce qui se passe dans cet album qui s’ouvre sur une épopée à la Morricone (Into the Blue), revisite le folk acoustique (Invisible Exit), la soul à la Marvin Gaye (Love on the Run) ou la variété pop 80’s comme sur One Night et Fade Away. A chaque fois, Burton et Mercer tombent juste, et lâchent neuf plages de très haut niveau. avec toujours cette patine si particulière dans le son. Une vraie leçon de production. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
