Mieux vaut agir que prévenir. Et c’est donc dans la nouvelle tradition des sorties de dernière minute que Jeffrey Lamar Williams alias Young Thug a publié cette mixtape début 2016. I'm Up fait donc suite au chef d’œuvre Barter 6, à Slime Season volume 1 et Volume 2 parus en 2015. Et force est de reconnaitre que le charismatique rappeur d’Atlanta est tout de même un génial extra-terrestre sur la scène rap actuel. Car entamer ce I’m Up par Fuck Cancer, un titre en soutien à son confrère Boosie Badazz passé sur le billard pour se faire ôter une tumeur au rein, n’est pas le genre d’intro que livre habituellement les albums de rap américain. Mais quand on s’appelle Young Thug et qu’on enregistre à une cadence aussi infernale, tout est possible… De la trempe d’un Lil Wayne ou d’un Drake, Young Thug sait tout faire avec son micro. Que ses sons soient avant-gardistes, sombres au possible ou presque pop, que ses productions soient minimalistes ou plus festives, il fait rebondir son flow comme nulle autre. En cela, I’m Up est un nouveau brillant feu d’artifice de son talent infini. C’est aussi la fête aux featurings avec des piges signées Lil Durk, Trouble, Ralo, Solo Lucci, Young Butta, Quavo et Offse. Une fois de plus, Young Thug est un vrai hors-la-loi du genre.
