Le groupe de Seattle a réussi un exploit dont ont rêvé des milliers d’autres artistes sans jamais pouvoir atteindre leur but : conjuguer succès critique, ventes faramineuses et esprit indépendant en un seul disque. Fleet Foxes a été élu album de l’année par Mojo, The Times et Pitchfork Media en 2008. Après avoir écoulé près de 250 000 exemplaires rien qu’aux Etats-Unis, le gang de ménestrels emmené par Robin Pecknold s’est offert le luxe de refuser les avances des majors, considérant ces dernières comme de véritables ennemies de la musique.

Le monde anglo-saxon s’est enflammé pour un projet que certains ont considéré comme séduisant mais pas toujours aussi abouti qu’on aurait pu le souhaiter. Trois ans plus tard, Fleet Foxes est de retour. Ceux qui ont vu en la musique de ces mélancoliques barbus le parfait compromis entre des chœurs à la Beach Boys, la pop aérienne de Band of Horses et une folk pour troubadours du 21ème siècle vont pouvoir savourer l’incroyable progression effectuée. Les autres vont se prendre une claque devant l’album que l’on attendait de la part d’un groupe aussi prometteur.

Le passage au second disque est rarement aisé quand on a été porté aux nues dès son premier effort studio. Pecknold et ses sbires semblent n’en avoir cure. Ils livrent une véritable perle d’une pureté exemplaire avec un naturel désarmant. Si Helplessness Blues était sorti dans les sixties, Fleet Foxes aurait fait partie d’un trio sacré aux côtés de Simon & Garfunkel ainsi que Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Les mélodies vocales de « The Plains / Bitter Dancer », la beauté simple de « Someone You'd Admire », le poignant et dénudé final de « Grown Ocean », autant d’intenses moment portés par un chanteur habité et un backing band-chorale s’exprimant comme un seul homme brisé.

Une beauté dont le sommet est atteint sur le sublime « The Shrine / An Argument » de plus de huit minutes, pièce maîtresse aux contours progressifs et à l’exécution folk déboulant sur un final expérimental et sombre. C’est fait, Fleet Foxes vient de signer une pièce maîtresse qui fera date dans sa carrière. Le joli mois de mai commence à peine et offre déjà un des albums de l’année.
