Figurant dans la bande originale du film 8 Mile, "Wanksta" de 50 Cent a fait un carton fin 2002, dénonçant l’hypocrisie des prétendus gangsters qui se vantent d'exploits criminels n’existant que dans leur imagination. Si quelqu'un a son mot à dire là-dessus, c'est bien 50 Cent. Il a fait ses preuves dans la rue (pour ne pas parler des faits divers) bien avant qu’Eminem n’invite le rappeur de Queens dans son album Shady. 50 Cent cite allègrement la Bible dans "Many Men (Wish Death)" tout en exultant à propos du rival qui lui a tiré dessus en 2000 avant d’être assassiné lui-même. De cette tranche de réalité, il évolue vers son carton dance-pop "In da Club". Tout au long de l’album, 50 Cent étonne par sa vision originale et crue du monde.

Formé, à l'approche de la quarantaine, par Killer Mike – un rappeur noir d'Atlanta proche d'OutKast, versé dans le street rap baraqué – et El-P, un b-boy blanc de Brooklyn devenu le parangon du rap expérimental, Run The Jewels aurait pu s'ajouter à la longue liste des castings ratés de l'histoire du hip-hop. À l'inverse, le duo est devenu une institution, qui ravit les foules et réveille les consciences. Kamasi Washington, le sax des Anges
