Tombé comme un bain de fraîcheur sur la planète rock en 2003, ce Get Born renouait avec la grande tradition des albums de rock ‘n’ roll britannique des années 60 et 70, façon The Faces. Le groupe australien frappait un grand coup dès son début. L’album est remarquable par sa variété et la mise en place de l’instrumentation et des vocaux, et possède irrésistiblement un côté « déjà vu »… ou plutôt déjà entendu, car le répertoire est en fait une vaste fumisterie fort habilement tournée !
« Are You Gonna Be My Girl » c’est « Lust For Life » d’Iggy Pop, « Last Chance » et « Cold Hard Bitch » presque n’importe quoi d’AC/DC, « Roll Over D.J » emprunte sans vergogne au « Takin’ Care Of Business » de Bachman Turner Overdrive (le pont identique !), « Look What You’ve Done » et « Radio Song » fleurent bon The Beatles période 1969, la ligne de basse de « Get What You Need » est celle du « All Day And All Of The Night » des Kinks, « Move On » semble tout droit sorti du Exile On Main Street des Rolling Stones.
Mais ce raccourci clone forme un ensemble homogène et s’écoute avec plaisir tant les interprétations sont dignes de leurs glorieuses aînées. On a l’impression à la fois réjouissante et nostalgique d’assister à une blague, un canular de potaches doués. Disque d’or en Australie et en Grande-Bretagne et platine aux Etats-Unis. Bien joué.
