Tony Bennett se produit sur la scène du Metropolitan Opera House de New York, en duo avec Aretha Franklin, au cours d’une soirée présentée par Bill Clinton. Tony Bennett rappelle à longueur de colonnes qu’il fut le premier Blanc à chanter avec l’orchestre noir de Count Basie. Tony Bennett adore les formules à l’emporte-pièce (le rock’n’roll est basé sur trois accords, et deux sont faux). On ignore où ce vénérable monsieur de 85 ans tire son énergie, mais force est de constater qu’Anthony Dominik Benedetto a su conserver au fil des décennies le charme initial du crooner, grandi dans l’ombre de Frank Sinatra, et qui a su maintenir comme une flamberge l’acidité d’une langue bien pendue : avec mon fils Danny, nous avons constaté que l’un de mes plus gros succès restait l’album Duets : An American Classic (2006).

Décision est alors prise de réitérer l’expérience, non pas avec les meilleurs chanteurs du monde, mais avec les plus gros vendeurs actuels...ce qui n’est pas tout à fait exact, si l’on relève la présence ici de k.d. lang, dans une rencontre de soie suspendue au cœur de « Blue Velvet », aisément l’un des sommets du disque. Pour le reste, l’Italo-Américain a donc porté son dévolu sur quelques-uns de ses petits-enfants putatifs, d’une Lady Gaga particulièrement en verve (« The Lady Is A Tramp ») à une Norah Jones, comme toujours troublante de sensualité, en passant par une Mariah Carey parfois hors-sujet avec des vocalises pré-pubères. Madame Franklin piaffe comme une pouliche contenue dans sa stalle au départ du Kentucky Derby, et, comme à l’accoutumée, Andrea Bocelli fait ce qu’il peut.

Mais le charme qui se dégage de ces dix-sept rencontres produites par rien moins que Phil Ramone atteint naturellement deux incontestables éminences : versant Muppet Show, le duo en compagnie de Willie Nelson (un jouvenceau de pas même 80 ans) génère le très gratifiant et très stupide sentiment de se gélifier sur place. « On The Sunny Side Of The Street », nom d’un petit bonhomme, devrait en effet donner quelques idées de remettez-nous-ça au roi de la country et à l’immortel crooner. Moins jubilatoire, les quelques minutes passées en compagnie d’Amy Winehouse rouvre les plaies : dans un exercice, parfaitement balisé par la chanteuse récemment disparue, celui de définitive réincarnation de Billie Holiday, les deux parviennent à nous émouvoir, nous troubler, et nous alanguir en une simple poignée de minutes.

Duets II reste un album merveilleux, car ce disque ne sert à rien : il n’annonce pas les temps futurs, ne propose pas de nouveaux canons esthétiques, ne renvoie pas au tumulte actuel. Cette collection élégante n’offre que quelques moments de grâce, de sublime décontraction, un érotisme raffiné mais bien présent, et quelques moments de grâce. Décliné par un vieux baroudeur qui nous la joue facile, comme un cocktail emperlé de glace pilée juste au sortir de la sieste. Autant dire qu’effectivement, il ne sert à rien. Merci, Benedetto.

Descriptif de l'album

Tony Bennett se produit sur la scène du Metropolitan Opera House de New York, en duo avec Aretha Franklin, au cours d’une soirée présentée par Bill Clinton. Tony Bennett rappelle à longueur de colonnes qu’il fut le premier Blanc à chanter avec l’orchestre noir de Count Basie. Tony Bennett adore les formules à l’emporte-pièce (le rock’n’roll est basé sur trois accords, et deux sont faux). On ignore où ce vénérable monsieur de 85 ans tire son énergie, mais force est de constater qu’Anthony Dominik Benedetto a su conserver au fil des décennies le charme initial du crooner, grandi dans l’ombre de Frank Sinatra, et qui a su maintenir comme une flamberge l’acidité d’une langue bien pendue : avec mon fils Danny, nous avons constaté que l’un de mes plus gros succès restait l’album Duets : An American Classic (2006).

Décision est alors prise de réitérer l’expérience, non pas avec les meilleurs chanteurs du monde, mais avec les plus gros vendeurs actuels...ce qui n’est pas tout à fait exact, si l’on relève la présence ici de k.d. lang, dans une rencontre de soie suspendue au cœur de « Blue Velvet », aisément l’un des sommets du disque. Pour le reste, l’Italo-Américain a donc porté son dévolu sur quelques-uns de ses petits-enfants putatifs, d’une Lady Gaga particulièrement en verve (« The Lady Is A Tramp ») à une Norah Jones, comme toujours troublante de sensualité, en passant par une Mariah Carey parfois hors-sujet avec des vocalises pré-pubères. Madame Franklin piaffe comme une pouliche contenue dans sa stalle au départ du Kentucky Derby, et, comme à l’accoutumée, Andrea Bocelli fait ce qu’il peut.

Mais le charme qui se dégage de ces dix-sept rencontres produites par rien moins que Phil Ramone atteint naturellement deux incontestables éminences : versant Muppet Show, le duo en compagnie de Willie Nelson (un jouvenceau de pas même 80 ans) génère le très gratifiant et très stupide sentiment de se gélifier sur place. « On The Sunny Side Of The Street », nom d’un petit bonhomme, devrait en effet donner quelques idées de remettez-nous-ça au roi de la country et à l’immortel crooner. Moins jubilatoire, les quelques minutes passées en compagnie d’Amy Winehouse rouvre les plaies : dans un exercice, parfaitement balisé par la chanteuse récemment disparue, celui de définitive réincarnation de Billie Holiday, les deux parviennent à nous émouvoir, nous troubler, et nous alanguir en une simple poignée de minutes.

Duets II reste un album merveilleux, car ce disque ne sert à rien : il n’annonce pas les temps futurs, ne propose pas de nouveaux canons esthétiques, ne renvoie pas au tumulte actuel. Cette collection élégante n’offre que quelques moments de grâce, de sublime décontraction, un érotisme raffiné mais bien présent, et quelques moments de grâce. Décliné par un vieux baroudeur qui nous la joue facile, comme un cocktail emperlé de glace pilée juste au sortir de la sieste. Autant dire qu’effectivement, il ne sert à rien. Merci, Benedetto.

Au pays des têtes couronnées, le roi (Cole) a bien sa place aux côtés du duc (Ellington) et du comte (Basie).
