Mais c’est Dieu là avec Janelle ? A peine les première secondes de Dirty Computer retentissent qu’une voix identifiable entre mille se mêle à celle de la chanteuse de Kansas City : Brian Wilson ! Fascinant ce choix du leader des Beach Boys pour entamer ce troisième album. Fascinant mais pas si incohérent. Comme feu son maître à penser Prince, Janelle Monáe n’a jamais restreint sa musique aux frontières de la soul, du funk et du R&B. Un Prince avec lequel elle travaillait justement à ce disque juste avant qu’il ne quitte la terre sans prévenir, en avril 2016… Une fois de plus, impossible de ne pas faire de parallèles entre Dirty Computer et le Prince des années 80/90. Comme lorsque retentit le riff de guitare de Kiss sur Make Me Feel. Mais Janelle Monáe est assez intelligente et surtout assez doué pour aller voir ailleurs que dans l’héritage de celui qu’elle cite à longueur d’interview comme son gourou ultime. Chez Stevie Wonder ? Lui aussi pointe le bout de ses lunettes sur le bien nommé Stevie’s Dream. Le dossier « featurings » de cette cuvée 2018 est complété par Pharrell Williams (I Got The Juice), Grimes (Pynk) et Zoe Kravitz (Screwed).
Mais avant toute chose, Dirty Computer est un disque on ne peut plus personnel et intime. L’auto-portait de son auteur. Qui elle est. Qui elle veut être. Comment elle désire être perçue par le public. Bien plus que sur ses deux précédents albums, Janelle Monáe se met ici totalement à nue. Musicalement, elle épure son style et signe des composition beaucoup plus directes et souvent très pop dans l’âme. D’où une efficacité décuplée. Une simplification salvatrice. Dans sa globalité, ce troisième album dégage une saveur assez vintage. Et de par sa parenté princière, on pense plus aux années 80 et 90 qu’aux 2000/2010. Pourtant, rien de passéiste niveau production. Et Dirty Computer assume totalement d’être une œuvre de 2018. Et peut-être l’une des plus ambitieuse même ? © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
