Avec Soundgarden, Nirvana et Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains constitue le big four du grunge de Seattle. Après des débuts plutôt orientés hard avec un nom de baptême en hommage aux Guns N’ Roses (Alice N' Chainz), AIC incarne la frange heavy metal du grunge. Arrivé après la vague Nevermind, Dirt accède au succès grand public grâce au morceau Would ? qui ouvre la bande originale de Singles, cette comédie romantique de Cameron Crowe qui prend pour décor Seattle et réunit le gratin de la scène grunge : Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam ou encore Screaming Trees. Tempos secs, riffs lourds mais surtout atmosphère morbide baignée par la voix écorchée de Layne Staley et la guitare distordue de Jerry Cantrell, Dirt monte encore – après Facelift – un cran au-dessus dans le glauque. Cramés jusqu’à l’os par l’héroïne qui ravage la côte, Cantrell comme Staley composent des huis clos métalliques claustrophobiques où la dope revient comme un motif obsédant. (“What's the difference/I'll die in this sick world of mine” sur Sickman). Comme une malédiction, en 2002 (un 5 avril comme Cobain), Staley succombe dans son appartement d’une overdose de speedball, un mélange de cocaïne et d’héroïne.
