Cette chanson fétiche d’Eric Clapton, l’un des classiques de Robert Johnson, a servi d'intitulé à deux coffrets-compilations, 1 & 2. Le premier, publié en 1988, est une somme des enregistrements studio depuis les Yardbirds jusqu’en 1987 contenant 72 titres dont une foison d’inédits ou de faces B obscures, comme le superbe « Wanna Make Love To You » de 1986, « Sleeping In The Ground » de Blind Faith en 69, deux versions différentes de « After Midnight », et les fameux « Tell The Truth » et « Roll It Over » de Derek and The Dominos produits par Phil Spector en 1970. Le second, de 35 titres, est une compilation thématique incluant exclusivement des enregistrements publics réalisés pendant les années 1970, où son jeu de guitare est prédominant, prétexte à de longues « jam sessions », notamment avec Carlos Santana. Les points forts en sont une superbe version lente du « Little Wing » de Jimi Hendrix et un solo déchirant (1974), une autre touchante version de « Wonderful Tonight » (1978), l’une des meilleures versions de « Layla » connues à ce jour, enregistrée le 25 juin 1975 aux USA, concise et flamboyante, et surtout, ce même jour, le « Badge » de Cream co-écrit avec George Harrison, version exceptionnelle qui a fait « autorité » jusqu’à celle de 1986 au festival de Montreux.
