This is in many ways (but not completely) the soundtrack to the Meredith Monk film of the same title. Many of the pieces from the film which are little more than fleeting musical passages are fleshed out here into fuller, more composition-oriented pieces. Very limited accompaniment here; pieces are primarily vocal compositions augmented with the occasional dulcimer, hurdy gurdy, or cello. The music has a medieval quality to it -- not surprising considering the subject nature of the film -- and unlike many soundtracks, this recording stands up well on its own as a body of recorded work. First-time listeners who have not seen the film will be compelled to see the film. A satisfying work.

Le trip hop en 10 albums

A l’aube des années 90, la vague trip hop submerge la Grande-Bretagne avec une électro influencée par la musique jamaïcaine et les beats rap. Rythmiques chloroformées et ambiances oppressantes, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba et quelques autres inventent une sorte de soul music sombre, futuriste et parfois très cinématographique. Coup de zoom en 10 albums sur un genre aux frontières floues mais à l’influence nette.

Le retour en grâce de Wilhelm Backhaus

Géant de la musique classique allemande, Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) est souvent apparu comme un rigoriste dénué de fantaisie. Son immense legs discographique pour Decca, encore assez rare à l’époque, est réédité aujourd’hui dans d’excellentes conditions. Il permet de réévaluer à la hausse une réputation trop souvent injuste. Backhaus nous apparaît singulièrement plus moderne qu’autrefois grâce à son respect du texte et à ses interprétations sans esbroufe qui cernent au mieux les compositeurs, depuis le premier enregistrement jamais réalisé d’un concerto, celui de Grieg, sévèrement abrégé en 1909, jusqu’à son dernier concert quelques jours avant sa mort.

Dominique Visse ou la nouvelle Renaissance

Avec son look de vieux rockeur paré de bagues et de boucles d’oreilles, ses cheveux longs hirsutes, ses blousons en cuir semblant sortir de “Easy Rider”, le road movie culte de la génération hippie, et sa voix pointue comme une jambe de compas, Dominique Visse promène depuis plus de quarante ans sa personnalité singulière dans le monde souvent conventionnel de la musique classique. En 1978, il a fondé l’Ensemble Clément Janequin qui allait remettre au goût du jour la chanson polyphonique de la Renaissance française. On leur doit l’émergence de tout un répertoire à travers une discographie exceptionnelle pour le label Harmonia Mundi.
