A 73 ans, Rod the Mod pourrait aménager un musée à son effigie. Un Grammy Award, deux fois présent dans le Rock’n’roll Hall of Fame, plus de 200 millions d’albums et de singles vendus, l’Ecossais séduit sous tous les angles. Mais pour son 30e album, il vise la métamorphose. Coproduit par Kevin Savigar, avec qui il travaille depuis les années 80, Blood Red Roses enchaîne les surprises. Loin des Maggie May et Handbags & Gladrags, c’est sur une pop très aérienne qu’il s’expose. Look in Her Eyes fait même abandonner à Stewart sa voix graveleuse et apporte de subtils effets d’écho. Toujours très punchy, il n’est pas difficile d’imaginer son déhanché sexy sur Hole in My Heart ; quant à son don de songwriter émouvant, c’est sur Farewell qu’il ressort. Bien que l’ensemble du disque sonne assurément contemporain, l’âme même du chanteur demeure par l’excitation des violons écossais sur le titre éponyme. Ce qui ne l’empêche pas pour autant de goûter aux sonorités reggae (I Don't Want to Get Married) ou de reprendre le succès d’Ervin Drake, It Was a Very Good Year.
