Buzzy Lee

Buzzy Lee's quirky adult alternative pop songs mix intimate reflection with ethereal melodies and quiet experimentalism. Buzzy Lee serves as a music alias for actress Sasha Spielberg, who had over a dozen film appearances to her credit as well as a handful of recordings under her given name before making her Buzzy Lee debut with the Facepaint EP in 2018. After following up with her debut album, Spoiled Love, in 2021, she reached her broadest audience yet with a featured spot on rapper Denzel Curry's 2022 single "John Wayne," which garnered millions of streams by year's end. Lee's second album, 2023's Internal Affairs, remained loyal to her off-center approach. Born in Los Angeles in 1990 to actress Kate Capshaw and film director Steven Spielberg, Sasha Rebekah Spielberg made the occasional appearance on film -- mostly in her father's -- before attending Brown University. She had additional small roles in movies including 2010's The Company Men and The Kids Are All Right before completing a degree in Literary Arts in 2012. Spielberg collaborated with fellow Brown alumnus Nicolas Jaar on a couple of songs under the indie electronic duo moniker Just Friends that year, including a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Avalanche." They played at South by Southwest in 2013, the same year Sasha released the EP Brother/Sister with another duo project, Wardell, this one a retro pop outfit with her younger brother Theo Spielberg. Wardell released the debut album Love/Idleness in early 2015. In the meantime, Sasha continued to take roles in the occasional limited series or independent film. Having appeared in her father's movies The Terminal, Munich, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in her teens, she had a brief role in his 2017 film The Post. Signing with Future Classic, Spielberg made her solo debut as Buzzy Lee with the Facepaint EP, a set of intimate, stylish adult alternative pop songs, in April 2018. An idiosyncratic three-song EP that essentially gave the "chopped and screwed" treatment to '70s Tommy Mandel songs while adding adlibbed lyrics, Close Encounters of Their Own Kind followed a year later. Produced by Justin Raisen (Tall Hands) and made with Mandel's permission, it ultimately included original material by Mandel. Returning to a more traditional but not entirely mainstream approach, Buzzy Lee's full-length debut, the Jaar-produced Spoiled Love, arrived on Future Classic in early 2021. That year, Spielberg also had a minor role in the Oscar-nominated film Licorice Pizza. In 2022, Buzzy Lee enjoyed her highest-profile release to date with a feature spot on rapper Denzel Curry's 2022 single "John Wayne." She followed that success in March 2023 with her second album, Internal Affairs. It was recorded with producer Gabe Wax (Soccer Mommy, Palehound).
