Eh oui, il est encore possible de découvrir une partition de Bernstein, ou plutôt la version de chambre de A Quiet Place, adaptée par Garth Edwin Sunderland et pour la première fois dirigée et enregistrée par le chef d’orchestre Kent Nagano, à la Maison Symphonique de Montréal. Ultime partition scénique du compositeur américain créée au Houston Grand Opera, en 1983, elle fut révisée par le librettiste Stephen Wadsworth et le compositeur qui y ajouta plusieurs fragments de l’ouvrage en un acte Trouble in Tahiti, de 1951, donnant lieu à deux nouvelles créations (Scala de Milan et Washington). Une nouvelle mouture – définitive – fut créée à l’Opéra de Vienne, sous la direction du compositeur en 1986. Fascinante à plus d’un titre, sorte d’Intermezzo de Strauss contemporain, l’œuvre dépeint la société américaine à travers la solitude et la crise existentielle d’un couple (Trouble in Tahiti) puis d’une famille. Bernstein citait Mahler pour la structure, avec un mouvement final d’une « noblesse grave » rappelant ceux des Troisième et Neuvième Symphonies de son modèle vénéré. Comme souvent chez lui, le mélange des styles (jazz, chœur antique, Broadway, Mahler, Berg, Britten, Copland…) provoque un cocktail détonant, qui lorgne du côté d’une conversation en musique plutôt que du grand opéra – ce qui paradoxalement rend cet ouvrage si particulier… et attachant. À redécouvrir, sous la baguette de l’ancien élève et fidèle Kent Nagano, à la tête de chanteurs solistes de haut vol, pour comprendre quel est cet « endroit tranquille » où « l’amour nous enseignera l’harmonie et la grâce ». © Franck Mallet / Qobuz

La suppression de Trouble in Tahiti — décision lourde s'il en est, mais qui instaure une unité de temps —, l'allègement de l'orchestration resserrent sans conteste la tension dramatique, mettant à nu les caractères. Chronique

Eh oui, il est encore possible de découvrir une partition de Bernstein, ou plutôt la version de chambre de A Quiet Place, adaptée par Garth Edwin Sunderland et pour la première fois dirigée et enregistrée par le chef d’orchestre Kent Nagano, à la Maison Symphonique de Montréal. Ultime partition scénique du compositeur américain créée au Houston Grand Opera, en 1983, elle fut révisée par le librettiste Stephen Wadsworth et le compositeur qui y ajouta plusieurs fragments de l’ouvrage en un acte Trouble in Tahiti, de 1951, donnant lieu à deux nouvelles créations (Scala de Milan et Washington). Une nouvelle mouture – définitive – fut créée à l’Opéra de Vienne, sous la direction du compositeur en 1986. Fascinante à plus d’un titre, sorte d’Intermezzo de Strauss contemporain, l’œuvre dépeint la société américaine à travers la solitude et la crise existentielle d’un couple (Trouble in Tahiti) puis d’une famille. Bernstein citait Mahler pour la structure, avec un mouvement final d’une « noblesse grave » rappelant ceux des Troisième et Neuvième Symphonies de son modèle vénéré. Comme souvent chez lui, le mélange des styles (jazz, chœur antique, Broadway, Mahler, Berg, Britten, Copland…) provoque un cocktail détonant, qui lorgne du côté d’une conversation en musique plutôt que du grand opéra – ce qui paradoxalement rend cet ouvrage si particulier… et attachant. La suppression de Trouble in Tahiti — décision lourde s'il en est, mais qui instaure une unité de temps —, l'allègement de l'orchestration resserrent sans conteste la tension dramatique, mettant à nu les caractères. Et le travail de réduction est viscéralement bernsteinien. Kent Nagano, lui, avait assisté le compositeur lors de la production viennoise de 1986. Enregistré en public, il entretient sans effort la tension interne, et maintient une nostalgie amère en accord étroit avec une distribution vocale très cohérente.
