It is truly a testament to the musical integrity and vision of a string quartet when its members and performances stand the test of time. Such is the case with the Smetana Quartet, whose career spanned more than four decades. This re-release of its 1962-1972 recordings of Beethoven's Golitsyn quartets makes an exceptional addition to any chamber music collection.
Immediately noticeable is the breathtaking sound quality and stereo imaging achieved during remastering. The listener is immersed in the sound of the quartet, almost as if he/she is sitting in the middle of the four players. The only slight issue that can be taken is the occasional absence of the cello passagework during forte sections. The first violin playing is beyond reproach, offering the listener powerful, crystalline clarity throughout the collection.
Each of the quartets is masterfully performed with some notable highlights. The third movement (subtitled "Hymn of Thanksgiving to the Divinity" from a convalescent in the Lydian mode) of the Op. 132 quartet is executed with stunning simplicity and meditative introspection. The Andante sections transport the listener briefly back to Beethoven's early classical period before being quickly returned to the solemnity of the Adagio. The coda of the Finale of the Op. 95 quartet is presented successfully at such a blazing speed as to make many modern, younger quartets envious of such virtuosity. In the great Op. 130 quartet, the Smetana makes the uncommon decision to include the Grosse Fugue, originally conceived as a movement of this quartet, but later published separately as Op. 133 because of its exceptional length. The result is a single string quartet of nearly an hour in duration. A lesser ensemble may encounter difficulty maintaining a listener's attention for such a period, but the Smetana infuses the work with such excitement, beauty, and energy as to leave the listener constantly yearning for more. The fifth-movement Cavatina, perhaps Beethoven's most sublime contribution to string quartet literature, could stand alone as an example of this quartet's incredible palate of tone color.
