En 1987, la problématique est simple pour Michael Jackson : comment faire mieux que Thriller ? Et si le pari était sans doute impossible, le tandem Michael/Quincy réussit à poursuivre et même développer ses expériences de fusion entre soul, funk, pop et rock. Le Bad d'ouverture, survitaminé, rappelle au public qui est le patron avant que des ballades sensuelles, des pop songs emballées dans de l'electro-funk classieux ou des orgies de synthés 100% eighties viennent faire de ce disque la suite quasi sans faute de Thriller.
