James Blunt le dit lui-même : son album est honnête et naïf. On ne saurait le contredire. La voix de ce doux rêveur, portée par le vague à l’âme de « High » ou le spleen de « Cry », laisse transparaître les souvenirs chargés d’émotion de son interprète, dans un album retraçant majoritairement ses amours décues et fraternités rompues. Ailleurs, Blunt se réfugie derrière les symboles de « Wisemen », part à la recherche de ses idoles Jimi Hendrix et Jim Morrison (« So Long Jimmy »), ou traduit en chanson les conflits qu’il a vécu et connaît bien, dans l’accroche-tripes « No Bravey ». Mais bien entendu, le morceau de bravoure de Back To Bedlam reste « You’re Beautiful », pomme de discorde de la critique et du public. Ce troisième single de Blunt, s’il fut lent au démarrage dans les charts, a finalement tout raflé sur son passage, enlevant les récompenses et records de la bouche des Coldplay (l’album déloge X&Y de sa première place) et Beyoncé aux Etats-Unis, en devenant ni plus ni moins le CD single le plus vendu depuis 1998 et le « I Believe » de Cher. « You’re Beautiful », ballade mélancolique sur la rencontre de son ex-petite amie avec un autre dans le métro londonien, est restée trente-sept semaines dans le Top 10 britannique, au grand dam des détracteurs déplorant le chant geignard de Blunt et assaillant les radios pour l’interdire de diffusion. Son successeur, « Goodbye My Lover » (sorti fin 2005), s’empare du même sujet – Blunt aurait-il trouvé son point de rencontre musical ? – pour obtenir un résultat légèrement inférieur en termes de chiffres mais tout aussi efficace pour les radios. En résumé, Back To Bedlam met l’âme de son auteur à nu dès son coup d’essai, tel un premier roman, et a ainsi conquis un large auditoire, mais lui restera-t-il suffisamment de cartouches pour continuer ?
