Quoi de mieux qu’un coffret de 4 CD pour illuminer la carrière d’un artiste trop tôt disparu ? En 2017, la mort soudaine de Tom Petty brisait le cœur de tous les fans de rock’n’roll dignes de ce nom. Sa femme Dana et sa fille Adria ont choisi de faire leur deuil en travaillant sur An American Treasure. Laissant derrière lui des trésors inédits, ses proches épaulées par le producteur Ryan Ulyate, Mike Campbell et Benmont Tench (les membres de son groupe) ont pris leur tâche très au sérieux. Une sélection quasi familiale comprenant des démos, des versions alternatives de titres d’album ou encore des live, qui souligne l’évolution du leader des Heatbreakers.

Des outtakes de 1976 (Surrender), en passant par les versions alternatives de 1979 (Louisiana Rain) jusqu’aux démos de 1984 (The Apartment Song) tout ici est puissant et sonne propre grâce au travail minutieux de remasterisation de Chris Bellman, qui avait déjà œuvré sur des bandes de Diana Ross, Rick James et quelques autres artistes de Motown. Une œuvre posthume qui retrace les débuts de Tom Petty avec les Heartbreakers mais aussi le groupe Mudcrutch et sa carrière solo sur 60 titres en Hi-Res 24Bit. Sur une organisation chronologique, c’est avec le live de 2016, Hungry No More, que cette anthologie de quatre heures s’achève. Quoi de mieux qu’un coffret de 4 CD pour illuminer la carrière d’un artiste trop tôt disparu ? En 2017, la mort soudaine de Tom Petty brisait le cœur de tous les fans de rock’n’roll dignes de ce nom. Sa femme Dana et sa fille Adria ont choisi de faire leur deuil en travaillant sur An American Treasure. Laissant derrière lui des trésors inédits, ses proches épaulées par le producteur Ryan Ulyate, Mike Campbell et Benmont Tench (les membres de son groupe) ont pris leur tâche très au sérieux. Une sélection quasi familiale comprenant des démos, des versions alternatives de titres d’album ou encore des live, qui souligne l’évolution du leader des Heatbreakers.

Des outtakes de 1976 (Surrender), en passant par les versions alternatives de 1979 (Louisiana Rain) jusqu’aux démos de 1984 (The Apartment Song) tout ici est puissant et sonne propre grâce au travail minutieux de remasterisation de Chris Bellman, qui avait déjà œuvré sur des bandes de Diana Ross, Rick James et quelques autres artistes de Motown. Une œuvre posthume qui retrace les débuts de Tom Petty avec les Heartbreakers mais aussi le groupe Mudcrutch et sa carrière solo sur 60 titres en Hi-Res 24Bit. Sur une organisation chronologique, c’est avec le live de 2016, Hungry No More, que cette anthologie de quatre heures s’achève. Un ascenseur émotionnel aussi bien pour les fans que pour les jeunes générations désireuses de découvrir un artiste essentiel de l’histoire du rock américain. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz
