À 65 ans, David Byrne descend de son vélo (sa passion ultime) pour publier son premier album solo en quatorze ans. Coécrit avec son vieux complice Brian Eno, avec lequel il commença à travailler à l’époque des Talking Heads, American Utopia est un patchwork comme seul Byrne en a le secret. Croiser les genres, fusionner les continents et abattre les frontières stylistiques, l’ancien étudiant de l'école de design de Rhode Island a toujours eu ça dans le sang. Après avoir fait du punk funk, de la salsa, du collage électro, des disques avec des gens aussi différents que Fatboy Slim et Annie Clark alias St. Vincent, de la musique de film et de ballet et environ 12 547 autres choses, il revient ici à un format de chanson un brin plus classique. Juste un brin.
D’essence pop, ses compositions sont perpétuellement striées par des éclairs électroniques, world ou funky, et flirtent souvent avec celles de son ancien groupe. Avec sa plume toujours aussi aiguisée et parfois décalée, David Byrne veut croire qu’une Amérique différente de celle de Donald Trump est possible. Aidé çà et là par quelques « jeunes » comme Sampha, TTY et Happa Isaiah Barr d’Onyx Collective, il accouche surtout de son disque solo le plus abouti depuis des lustres.
