Ses fans le savent bien : Nat King Cole était un pianiste de jazz démentiel. Au sommet de sa gloire, il délaissa parfois l’instrument pour enregistrer des albums un brin plus easy listening, certes de grande qualité mais musicalement moins renversant. Enregistré durant l’été 1956 à Hollywood, After Midnight reste un sommet de son art unique en compagnie de son trio. Et derrière son piano, Nat King Cole offre une sorte d’hybride, jazz mais pas trop, qui touchera alors TOUS ses aficionados. Entouré du contrebassiste Charlie Harris, du guitariste John Collins et du batteur Lee Young, il développe son style tout en finesse, chantant magistralement sur des standards comme Just You Just Me ou Caravan, swinguant comme nul autre. Sur certains titres, le saxophoniste Willie Smith, le trompettiste Harry Edison, le violoniste Stuff Smith, le tromboniste Juan Tizol et le percussionniste Jack Costanzo viennent apporter quelques touches de couleur à un disque parfait. En 1987, le label Capitol avait réédité cet enregistrement en l’accompagnant de morceaux inédits, tous présents sur cette version remasterisée. © MD/Qobuz
