Accelerate est extrêmement maigre, puisqu'il ne fait que 36 minutes. Les guitares de Peter Buck fusent, de même que les chœurs de Mike Mills. Les titres ne dérivent pas, ils attaquent. Même les chansons acoustiques ont un son rock, peut-être parce qu'elles rappellent l'étrange grâce déglinguée de "Swan Swan H". Sur Accelerate, R.E.M. revient à ses premières amours, à ce qui a poussé ses membres à jouer du rock & roll au tout début, au lieu de venir ressusciter un mythe éteint. R.E.M. sort un album capable de rivaliser avec l'œuvre de ses pairs, tels que Dinosaur Jr. qui a fait un comeback remarquable avec Beyond et Sonic Youth avec Rather Ripped, un opus simplement essentiel.
