Hilary Hahn is no ordinary violinist. In addition to her internationally acclaimed talents, she is widely praised for her natural and generous approach to music, as well as for her efforts to democratise classical music for young audiences. Hahn was born in 1979 in Lexington, Virginia, USA. She began learning the violin at the age of four using the Suzuki method. Six years later, her meteoric progress allowed her to enter the famous Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, and the following year she performed for the first time as a soloist. At the age of 16 she signed an exclusive six-year contract with Sony Classical, before moving to the German label Deutsche Grammophon. Her recordings include works from the classical and romantic repertoires with world-renowned conductors and orchestras, in programmes that for the first time combine contemporary music — often written specifically for her — with 'classical' works. In addition, she has commissioned other works from various composers for herself, such as the 27 short pieces Hilary Hahn Encores. Her new album Eclipse, which contains live recordings from the past year, marks a central turning point in her musical career, which was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
