Thibault Cauvin

Guitarist Thibault Cauvin has performed and recorded music of many different kinds, from Baroque pieces to contemporary and cinematic works. He records for the Sony Classical label. Cauvin was born in Bordeaux, France, on July 16, 1984. His father, Philippe Cauvin, was a jazz and rock guitarist and also a composer. Thibault attended the Regional Conservatory of Bordeaux (CRR) and the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris (CNSMD), studying with Olivier Chassain and graduating with honors. He also had lessons from Alvaro Pierri and Judicaël Perroy, among others. Cauvin had an exceptionally strong record of accomplishment in guitar competitions, winning by his own count 36 international awards before turning 20. In 2008, he made his debut album, No. 4, on the GSP Recordings label; the album features works by his father as well as by Dusan Bogdanovic, Roland Dyens, Atanas Ourkouzounov, and Chassain. Cauvin returned in 2013 on the Vogue label with the album Danse avec Scarlatti. In 2013, Cauvin formed an ensemble of 100 guitars in Bordeaux to celebrate his musical anniversary. In 2014, he commented that he had given more than 1,000 concerts in some 120 countries, and he has continued to tour vigorously. He has made appearances at well-known venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Gasteig in Munich and at such lesser-known ones as the Guatemala Arts Center. Cauvin's repertory is diverse, running from the Baroque through contemporary works as well as film music, which he explored on the album Films in 2021. That album appeared on the Sony Classical label, Cauvin's home since 2016's The Vivaldi Album, which he recorded with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris. He made online appearances playing the music of Leo Brouwer during COVID-19 shutdowns in 2020. He moved to Claves in 2021 for an appearance on the album Pierre Wissmer: Musiques Symphonique & Concertos. In 2023, Cauvin released the album Bach on Sony Classical. An avid surfer, he often performs on the soundtracks of films by his friend Nicolas Pier Morin, who has issued a film about Cauvin's career.
