Bad//Dreems

Australia's Bad//Dreems play a rough-and-tumble sort of jangle rock that has roots in the country's underground rock scene of the '70s and '80s (Paul Kelly, the Saints) as well as in American punk and college rock (the Replacements, Wipers). After a series of well-received singles and an EP, the band made their full-length debut with 2015's Dogs at Bay, followed in 2017 by the gritty follow-up Gutful. Two years of hard touring help cement their reputation as a fiery live act, after which they released their third LP, Doomsday Ballet. Formed in the South Australian city of Adelaide in the summer of 2012 by singer/guitarist Ben Marwe along with guitarist Alex Cameron, bassist James Bartold, and drummer Miles Wilson, the group released its first single, "Chills," in September of that year, followed shortly afterward by a second single, "Caroline." Both songs fared well critically and gained exposure through Triple J youth radio. Their ramshackle yet heartfelt sound resonated with the often-maligned image of their city as they mixed raw pub rock with loosely downtrodden indie. They recorded four more songs in early 2013 that, combined with their two singles, formed their debut EP, Badlands, which was released that summer on indie Mirador Records. Shortly thereafter, Bad//Dreems signed with Sydney label Ivy League Records and released a pair of singles, "Dumb Ideas" and "My Only Friend," in April 2014. Their debut LP, Dogs at Bay, arrived a year later in August 2015. A critical success, the album helped put them on the international map ahead of their more aggressive 2017 follow-up, Gutful, which, like their debut, was produced by Mark Opitz (INXS, Cold Chisel). After several tours, both national and abroad, Bad//Dreems returned to the studio, this time working with producers Burke Reid and Jack Ladder. Their third album, Doomsday Ballet, arrived in October 2019.
