A lot has happened since Valerie June emerged in 2006 with her debut album, The Way of the Weeping Willow. Between then and now, she released a major record, Pushin’ Against a Stone (2013), that brought her international acclaim. The Memphis native had deep roots in the American Southern sound, often creating choral recordings that evoked local soul but still had a good dose of Cajun influence. Now she’s back with Under Cover, a seventh album that’s perhaps less fiery but still contains beautiful ballads such as ‘Look at Miss Ohio’ and ‘Into My Arms’. Valerie June follows the sound of yesteryear and respects the history of the music, a bit like Norah Jones on ‘Don’t It Make You Want to Go Home’. Throughout her discography, she revisits this period of American history, as evidenced by her cover of John Lennon's ‘Imagine’, where she brings up the tempo slightly but retains the original sobriety and emotion. Valerie June turns this historicism into an artistic quality – one which shines on every album. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
