Three years after an exceptional first album, Family Portrait, British producer Felix Clary Weatherall's second album has raised the bar even higher. Still signed to Flying Lotus' label, Brainfeeder, Ross From Friends continues with the kind of songwriting that made a splash in his 2016 debut hit You'll Understand, straddling the line between the dancefloor and the bedroom, keeping the listener caught between wanting to dance and wanting to cry. That sensation is intensely present on Love Divide, with its buried house beat and its distorted vocals sounding like waves of melancholy, and on The Daisy, the electronic ballad that opens the album.

For this record, Ross From Friends decided to completely cut loose the constraints of recording, and use a plug-in on Ableton, called Thresho, which allowed him to record instruments without manual input. Thus liberated, he was able to take his pick from six months' worth of sounds that he had laid down while isolating in his South London pad. He slips in nods to styles that have emerged in the English capital over the last ten years, from Jamie XX to Burial to Four Tet to Ms. Dynamite. This produces strokes of strokes like Life in a Mind, which pays homage to both UK garage and rave culture, or the splendid Revellers, which combines harmony, melody, drive and trance. This album is complex and refined, but an easy listen for all that. Ross From Friends is well on the way to finding his own personal Holy Grail. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
