Another KGLW album? No, Butterfly 3001 is a double album of Butterfly 3000 remixes released in June 2021. Here, electro big shots from very different worlds take on the Australians. And it starts off strong, with DJ Shadow at the controls of Black Hot Soup and Jamaican producer Scientist on Shanghai, sung by Ambrose Kenny-Smith. Hopeton Brown: “I've always wanted to apply my dub mixing techniques to music outside the typical 'reggae mould'. Their music and especially Shanghai provided the perfect landscape for me to create something rich and exciting.” If Butterfly 3000 was already the most electro chapter of the septet's prolific discography, its successor allows KGLW to come out with a consistently quirky project. “We’ve put off doing a remix album for a long time,” admits guitarist Joey Walker. “Maybe it was conscious, maybe it wasn’t. But it’s happening now. That’s not to say that Butterfly 3000 makes the most sense to remix. It might seem like the obvious one, but it’s not. Yes it’s electronic. But so is a fridge. Have you tried to dance to Butterfly? It’s hard. It ties your shoelaces together. It’s duplicitous in its simplicity. But Butterfly 3001 expands on this.” We don't know if Butterfly 3001 is easier to dance to, but the variety of guests provides the luxury of eclecticism: the Flaming Lips on the psychedelic-pop song Ya Love, Peaches on the modular Neu Butterfly 3000, Aurelia Kaitlyn Smith on the synthetic patchwork Catching Smoke, to which Dâm-Funk provided a groovier interpretation a few tracks earlier, the rising star of lo-fi house Mall Grab or the more unusual Hieroglyphic Being.
