Violeta Vicci

Violeta Vicci is a multi-instrumentalist with a versatile roster of collaborations. Beginning as a violinist, her own recordings feature her voice and viola playing as well. Although she is a classically trained musician, Vicci is also a skilled improviser and composer with a very distinct electronic, ambient sound. Her first solo album, Autovia, saw release in 2019. She focused on violin pieces, including works of Bach and original material, on 2021's Mirror Images. Violeta Barreña Witschi began playing the violin when she was four years old, and her sound palette has since grown to include the viola, voice, keyboards, and electronics. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Howard Davis and Tomotada Soh, and at the Royal College of Music with Itzhak Rashkovsky. As a soloist, she has since performed with the Salzburg Chamber Soloists, the London Contemporary Orchestra, and other professional classical ensembles at major venues including The Royal Albert Hall and The Barbican. In 2012, she founded Duo Diez, a violin and classical guitar duo specializing in Spanish and Latin-American classical music, with Dimitris Dekavallas. They released From Granada to Buenos Aires on Demerara Records in 2015. While anchored in the classical world, her many collaborations in the alternative music realm include performing live with Elbow and for Jónsi & Alex, and she appears on Thom Yorke's solo album Anima (2019) and Groove Armada's Edge of the Horizon (2020), among others. Vicci's first solo album, Autovia, was produced by Martin Glover (aka Youth from Killing Joke) and featured ambient electronic soundscapes combining synthetic and acoustic sounds. It was released on Painted Word Music in 2019. Her second album, 2021's Mirror Images (Gramola), showcased classical violin and viola works as well as her own improvisations.
