The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin

The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin combine traditional choral repertory with works connected to the music and literature of Ireland. The Choral Scholars have collaborated with major Irish performing organizations and with leading film music composers. The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin is a chamber choir of about 16 members. The group was founded at the University of Dublin School of Music in 1999 by Desmond Earley, who remains its conductor and artistic director. The choir members are students in various disciplines, not necessarily music students. The members are not choral scholars in the English sense of being scholarship recipients who sing in chapel choirs in exchange for financial support, but rather scholars who study choral music. Each semester, the students receive vocal coaching, language instruction, and performance classes. The group's goal is to combine a classical focus with an inspiration found in Irish music and literature. The vocal style of the Scholars diverges sharply from that of English collegiate chapel choirs, including a layer of folk influence. Its repertory includes both contemporary choral music of various kinds and reimagined traditional music of Ireland. The Scholars have commissioned new music from a variety of contemporary composers, including Eoghan Desmond, Colin Mawby, and Michael McGlynn. The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin have performed with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the European Union Chamber Orchestra, and have toured Britain and Scotland, continental Europe, and the U.S. In 2019, the Scholars made its debut at New York's Carnegie Hall. The choir has collaborated with film composers Ennio Morricone and Hans Zimmer. Signed to the Signum Classics label, the Choral Scholars of University College Dublin released its debut album, Invisible Stars: Choral Music of Ireland & Scotland, in 2016. The group followed up with Perpetual Twilight, featuring a range of traditional material, in 2019. The year 2020 saw the release of the holiday album Be All Merry.
