Tasto Solo

The Spanish early music group Tasto Solo performs thematic programs of late medieval and early Renaissance music in historically accurate but original presentations. In the early 2020s, the group began recording for Jordi Savall's Alia Vox label. Tasto Solo was formed in Spain in 2006 by Guillermo Pérez (born in 1980 in Barcelona), a researcher and specialist in early keyboard instruments. He is a virtuoso player of the organetto, a small portative (portable) organ of the 14th and 15th centuries, and he continues to direct Tasto Solo, generally from the keyboard of this instrument. "Tasto solo" is an Italian term meaning "the key alone," i.e., played without continuo chords. Among Pérez's accomplishments is that he, with Italian organ builder Walter Chinaglia, realized a design for an organetto found in the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci. The group is chamber-sized but fluctuates in membership and size according to the music being performed. Tasto Solo made its recording debut in 2009 with Meyster ob allen Meystern: Konrad Paumann and the 15th Century German Keyboard School. Tasto Solo has appeared in top European venues, including L'Auditori de Barcelona, the Konzerthaus Berlin, and the BOZAR arts center in Belgium. The group has been popular at festivals, including the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music in Austria, the Utrecht Oude Muziek Festival in the Netherlands, and the Tage Alter Musik Regensburg in Germany. In 2020, Tasto Solo made its U.S. debut at Arizona State University, and from 2019 to 2022, the group served as artists-in-residence at the Château de Bournazel in Aveyron, France. Tasto Solo's concerts are organized around a single theme, such as Salve Psallentes: The Marian Liturgy of the Buxheim Codex, La Flor en Paradis: Early Polyphony and Courtly Love, and Eros & Subtilitas: Capricci, Madrigali, e Danze in Dialogo. These programs, thoroughly researched, include dramaturgical elements, and they have formed the basis for Tasto Solo's recordings. The albums have appeared mostly on Passacaille, but in 2023, Tasto Solo moved to Alia Vox for the recorded version of Eros & Subtilitas: Capricci, Madrigali, e Danze in Dialogo.
