Enigma Norteño

Enigma Norteño are a regional Mexico group from Culiacán, Sinaloa who broke through stateside in 2010 with the hit singles "El Ondeado (M1)" and "Aunque Sea en Silencio (Cuatro Paredes)" and have become an international success. Each succeeding single and album, through 2017's De Aqui Soy, has placed on the charts, while their videos have garnered hundreds of millions of views. Known for their Sinaloense musical style, and in particular their narcocorridos, Enigma Norteño are a quartet comprised of Ernesto Barajas (bass, vocals), Humberto Pérez (guitar, vocals), Freddy Hernández (accordion), and José Baldenegro (drums). They made their full-length album debut with El Jardinero (2004), followed by Infiel (2007) and La Invitación (2008). Stateside success came with their fourth album, Corridos de Altura (2009), which spawned the singles "El Ondeado (M1)" and "El Sr. Mayo Zambada," the former of which proved especially popular, reaching the Top 40 of the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. Enigma Norteño's fifth album, Juego Prohibido (2010), was an even greater success, spawning the Top 20 hit "Aunque Sea en Silencio (Cuatro Paredes)," plus a couple other promotional singles, "Chavo Felix" and "Iván y Viene." Following a live album, En Vivo Desde Culiacán, Sinaloa (2011), Enigma Norteño released the albums Y Si Supieras (2011) and Generales de Batalla (2012), featuring the respective singles "El Mayito Gordo" and "Los Lujos," and the Regional Mexican Airplay chart hits "Que Seas Feliz" and "Se Te Olvidos." While 2013's Diferentes Niveles did not chart, "Calla y Me Besas," the first single and opening track from 2014's Enemigo en Casa, hit number four at Regional Mexican Airplay. While sales numbers were respectable, the band made most of its money from both touring -- which they did relentlessly -- and their YouTube videos, which had millions of views. Two compilations followed: La Vida del Rey, which netted the number 35 single "Que No Diera," and the live Puras Rancheritas Pisteables; the studio Van a Querer Mas? followed in 2016. Neither charted but both did well at social media and streaming. They rocketed back to the charts with the Top 20 airplay single "Batallandola" from 2017's De Aqui Soy that peaked inside the Top 40 on Top Latin Albums and inside the Top 20 at streaming. They followed with a pair of live albums in 2018 -- Con Las Guitarritas en Vivo and Recordando a Pepe en Vivo con Tololoche. While the Sinaloans issued only one single the following year, the Top 20 "Aunque Sea en Silencio (Amor de Cuatro Paredes)," they toured and recorded steadily. In February of the following year they released Que Siga la Fiesta, which opened with "Aunque Sea en Silencio (Amor de Cuatro Paredes)." Enigma Norteño pumped out five more singles in 2019, including the corrido "Javier Diaz," which clocked inside the Top 20 at Regional Mexican Songs in August. Their prolific run continued into 2020 with the release of their next album, ¿Será Prudente?.
