British music for strings is the focus of this LSO Live release by Roman Simovic and the London Symphony Orchestra String Ensemble, and the three works they perform are central to the string orchestra's repertoire around the world. Ralph Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is one of the greatest hits of the 20th century, and Edward Elgar's Introduction and Allegro is equally durable and popular, but the standout work of this recording is the brilliant Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, one of Benjamin Britten's earliest successes and a solid programming choice. Too often, British music is narrowly characterized by the pastoral style and the overuse of English folk songs, and numerous works represent that tradition. Yet the offerings here are more sophisticated in outlook and approach, and their appeal lies in their spectacular string writing, which Simovic and his musicians handle with assured control. While the Introduction and Allegro is a tour de force of virtuosity, and the Fantasia is a masterpiece of scoring for antiphonal string orchestras, the Variations is astonishing for its kaleidoscopic orchestration and novel effects that are unlike any string work before it. This hybrid SACD may not draw much attention to itself, especially when compared with flashier titles in LSO Live's symphonic catalog, but it definitely deserves attention for its skillful playing and compelling program.
