Wenn die Namen Miles David und John Coltrane auf ein und demselben Plattencover zu lesen sind, ist Gänsehaut vorprogrammiert. Auf dieser sechsten Episode der Bootleg Series des Trompeters können wir ihm dabei zuhören, wie er mehr und mehr in Ektase gerät. The Final Tour konzentriert sich auf das letzte Kapitel der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Miles und Coltrane. Auf vier CDs können wir Performances bestaunen, die während ihrer Europa-Tour im Jahre 1960 - ihrer letzten gemeinsamen Tour, bevor der Saxofonist im Juli 1967 verstarb - aufgenommen wurden. Wir finden hier zwei Konzerte aus dem Olympia-Saal in Paris vom 21. März 1960, zwei Konzerte vom 22. März in Stockholm und eins vom 24. März in Kopenhagen. Das Ganze ist zum ersten Mal von analogen Bändern aus zu hören.

Diese fünf Konzerte finden nicht viel mehr als ein Jahr nach der Erscheinung des Meisterwerkes Kind Of Blue statt, das die Jazz-Szene komplett überrollt hat. Mit der kreativen Kraft der beiden Protagonisten, vergleichbar mit der eines Atomkraftwerks, scheint das Quintett jede Sekunde kurz vor einer Explosion zu stehen. Mit der Unterstützung des Pianisten Wynton Kelly, des Kontrabassisten Paul Chambers und des Schlagzeugers Jimmy Cobb liefern Miles und Trane wilde Improvisationen, in denen sie an einigen Stellen ineinander verschmelzen und an anderen nicht unterschiedlicher klingen könnten. Und wie ein Wunder hält alles zusammen, das Kartenhaus bricht an keiner Stelle ein. Im Gegenteil! Hier liegt die Magie dieser fünf Konzerte: Man kann die Individualität der fünf Giganten heraushören und gleichzeitig offenkundig ihre Kapazität bezeugen, sich an der Hand zu nehmen und zu einer Einheit zu verschmelzen.

Was das Repertoire angeht, ist diese Sammlung eine Art Nirwana für alle Miles-Fans. Man kann darauf seine größten Themen hören, die zwar nicht immer aus seiner eigenen Feder stammen, ihm jedoch zu seinem Erfolg verholfen haben: ’Round Midnight, Bye Bye Blackbird, On Green Dolphin Street, Walkin’, All Of You, Oleo, So What oder auch All BluesThe Final Tour endet mit einem verblüffenden Interview zwischen Coltrane und dem schwedischen Dj Carl-Erik Lindgren. „Fühlen Sie Wut in Ihnen?“, fragt ihn dieser, „Nein“, antwortet ihm Trane, „Ich habe letztens einem Freund erklärt, dass der Grund, warum ich so viele unterschiedliche Klänge spiele - und genau das kann manchmal nach Wut klingen - der ist, dass ich versuche, sehr viele Dinge gleichzeitig auszudrücken.
