Nachdem sie mit ihren Clams die Westküste unsicher gemacht hat, macht sich Shannon Shaw auf nach Nashville, genauso wie Dusty Springfield im Jahre 1968. Mit einem offensichtlichen Augenzwinkern in Richtung Dusty in Memphis stellt dieses erste Kapitel als Solokünstlerin den Anfang ihrer Emanzipation dar. Shannon & The Clams, so heißt die Band aus dem kalifornischen Oakland, die ebenso von Primus wie von Devo, Missing Person und Roy Orbison beeinflusst wurde, die die Kunst der Verkleidung perfekt beherrscht, absurde Kurzfilme dreht, Journalisten zu sich in ihre winzig kleine Bude einlädt und bei Burger Records unter Vertrag steht. Reine Poesie, die aus Punk, Rockabilly, Doo Wop und Garage besteht. Noch mehr Punk, noch schludriger: Hunx and His Hunx, die Band, der Shannon sich auf Seth Bogarts Einladung hin anschließt. Im Alleingang können wir Shannon nun in einer neuen Erscheinung bestaunen.
Mit ihrer rauen Stimme singt sie Doo-Wop-Soul, wie die großen Girlbands à la Ronettes, Shirelles oder Shangi-Las ihn fabrizierten. Diesen Stil konnte man bereits in dem von Dan Auerbach produzierten Track Onion mit ihrer Band The Clams heraushören. Shannon hält zwar weiterhin ihren Bass in der Hand, beansprucht nun jedoch das Scheinwerferlicht für sich ganz alleine. Der Sänger der Black Keys, Fan ihrer Band The Clams, hat sie hierfür in sein Studio Easy Eye Sound eingeladen. Die üppige Blondine hat nicht lange gezögert und traf dort mit sechs Songs im Gepäck auf eine Clique aus überdiplomierten Musikern, um so das ihr versprochene Schicksal in die Realität umzusetzen. Diese Musiker haben bereits mit Aretha, Elvis und auch Dusty aufgenommen, da kann man schnell eingeschüchtert sein… Nein, ohne Scham brüllt sie ihre Wut und Melancholie über alte Lieben hinaus, bringt ihre katzenhafte Stimme zum Kratzen und verzaubert alle mit ihrem divahaften Charme. Mit funkelnden Sixties-Melodien und kinematographischen Arrangements, die an James Bond erinnern, hat uns Auerbach ein großartiges Album erschaffen. Stilvoll und zeitlos. Mit leisen Glockenspiel- und Vibrafon-Klängen und einem süßlichen Retro-Duft. Dan hat den Phil Spector in sich rausgelassen und so Shaws ganzes Genie zum Vorschein gebracht.
