KiHyun

As a member of the K-Pop act Monsta X, Yoo Ki-hyun -- more commonly known as Kihyun -- helped send four albums to the Korean number one spot between 2017 and 2020. Kihyun began releasing his own material in 2015, the very same year that Monsta X formed, and their careers ran simultaneously. Whereas Monsta X's music often pushed bombastic EDM and hip-hop influences to the fore, Kihyun's pop-focused solo material was usually more tempered. Kihyun was born in Seoul in November 1993 and was raised there alongside his elder brother before attending Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts in Anseong City, Gyeonoggi province. His big break came on No Mercy -- the Mnet talent-finding TV show -- which resulted in the seven-member Monsta X being pieced together by the Starship Entertainment agency ahead of a debut EP, May 2015's Trespass. The release featured "No Exit," a lively rock-rap track co-written by Kihyun. By this point, Kihyun had already appeared on two collaborative singles backed by the No Mercy brand, one of which -- January's "Pillow" with Soyou and Giriboy -- reached the Korean Top Five. While still promoting Trespass, he appeared alongside Jooheon -- a fellow Monsta X member -- on "Attractive Woman" from the TV series Orange Marmalade. Before the year was out, he performed "One More Step" for the romantic comedy series She Was Pretty. Kihyun's subsequently busy schedule of record releases, world tours, and TV appearances with Monsta X dictated that he indulge in comparatively little solo activity. However, between 2016 and 2021, many of his tracks continued to show up in Korean TV series. They almost always accompanied romantic comedies, but "Can't Breathe" -- a moody slice of hip-hop and pop, once again performed alongside Jooheon -- broke the mold and was featured on the first episode of the 2018 MBC TV crime drama Partners for Justice. Following Monsta X's 2021 success in both Japan and the U.S. -- with the respective Japanese-language album Flavors of Love and the English-language full-length The Dreaming -- Starship approached Kihyun to request the recording of a three-track solo EP. The resulting Voyager was issued in March 2022, and each of its tracks hit the Top Ten of the U.S. World chart.
