Der produktive Bostoner multipliziert Metamorphosen und Abenteuer (The 6ths, The Gothic Archies oder Future Bible Heroes) und konzentriert sich dabei auf Absurdität und Fantasie. Nach dem Jubiläumsalbum 50 Song Memoir (2017), mit fünfzig Titeln für ebenso viele Lebensjahre, zeigt sich Merritt hier mit Quickies - achtundzwanzig kurze Lieder (Death Pact (Let’s Make A) dauert nur siebzehn Sekunden!) zu den unterschiedlichsten Themen - frivoler. Quickies ist ein facettenreicher und zweideutiger Titel. In dieser Welt der sanften Dekadenz finden wir manchmal humorvolle parodistische Anklänge wie etwa das sehr an Dandy Warhols angelehnte (I Want To Join) A Biker Gang, das eher bewegende The Boy in the Corner mit einer typischen Scott Walker-Stimme und das sehr an Leonard Cohen erinnernde I Wish I Had Fangs and a Tail.
