Clutch haben auf ihrem fünften Album rauh rockende und von überflüssigem Ballast befreite Songs eingespielt. Neil Fallons extreme Vocals sorgen wie immer für die nötige Eigenständigkeit. Funk und Blues sorgen für den nötigen Groove. Von catchy Gitarren-Licks ganz zu schweigen. Wer ältere Clutch-Scheiben kennt, mag vielleicht anderes gewohnt sein. Wer einfach nur auf satten, schwer groovenden Rock steht, sollte seine Anlage mit "Pure Rock Fury" füttern.
Die meist eingängigen Riffs der dreizehn Tracks sind ohne viel Tamtam auf den Punkt gespielt. Dabei teilt der von Tim Sult (git), Dan Maines (b), Jean Paul Gaster (dr) und Fallon produzierte recht spezielle Rocksound irgendwie die erdrückende Schwere des Stoner Rocks. Der Clutch-Groove ist gleichwohl zu funky. Fallons knochentrockene Vocals dürften für die Ohren des Otto Normalhörers eher clownesk klingen. Seinen Flow als unkonventionell zu bezeichnen, ist jedenfalls untertrieben. Man höre sich "Frankenstein" und seinen Sprechgesang in "Careful With That Mic..." an.
Während die ersten beiden Stücke geradlinig heraus gerotzt sind, treiben ab "Open Up The Border" meist Blues- und Funk-Rhythmen die Tracks an. Schweren Clutch-Groove im Midtempo gibt es auf einem der besten Stücke des Albums "The Great Outdoors!". "Sinkemlow" und das hitverdächtige, funkige Stück "Brazenhead" grooven wie Sau. Im düsteren "Immortal" fühlt man sich an die Mörderriffs eines Angus Young erinnert.
Clutch haben ihre Nische gefunden. Diese verlassen sie auch nach zehn Jahren Bandgeschichte nicht. Trotzdem könnte man "Pure Rock Fury" auch fünf Balken verpassen. Denn die vier Männer aus Germantown, Maryland machen nicht lang rum, sondern rollen und rocken los.
