Es ist nahezu unmöglich, von dieser berühmten Fassung der Cavalleria Rusticana unberührt zu bleiben, die Karajan in den 1960er Jahren auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Kunst sowie in einer von den Göttern der Opernkunst gesegneten Zeit mit den damals größten Sängern aufgenommen hat. Karajan dirigiert Mascagni auf eine Art, die ihn als ein Genie wie Mozart oder Verdi erscheinen lässt. Unter seiner Leitung erklingt das Mailänder Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala in einer Berliner Opulenz und mit der hohen Kunst des weichen Legato. Der Hörer kann das herrliche Timbre von Carlo Bergonzi, seinen charmanten Akzent, und vor allem die tragische, poetische und leidenschaftliche Intensität bewundern, mit der er die Rolle des Turridu verkörpert. Mit seiner Ausstrahlung und seiner strahlenden Stimme überragt er seine Partner, trotz der starken Bühnenpräsenz und der voluminösen Stimme der Fiorenza Cossotto, bei weitem. Dank der ausgezeichneten Stereotechnik sind Stimmen und Orchester perfekt ausbalanciert. Albumbeschreibung

Es ist nahezu unmöglich, von dieser berühmten Fassung der Cavalleria Rusticana unberührt zu bleiben, die Karajan in den 1960er Jahren auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Kunst sowie in einer von den Göttern der Opernkunst gesegneten Zeit mit den damals größten Sängern aufgenommen hat. Karajan dirigiert Mascagni auf eine Art, die ihn als ein Genie wie Mozart oder Verdi erscheinen lässt. Unter seiner Leitung erklingt das Mailänder Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala in einer Berliner Opulenz und mit der hohen Kunst des weichen Legato. Der Hörer kann das herrliche Timbre von Carlo Bergonzi, seinen charmanten Akzent, und vor allem die tragische, poetische und leidenschaftliche Intensität bewundern, mit der er die Rolle des Turridu verkörpert. Mit seiner Ausstrahlung und seiner strahlenden Stimme überragt er seine Partner, trotz der starken Bühnenpräsenz und der voluminösen Stimme der Fiorenza Cossotto, bei weitem. Dank der ausgezeichneten Stereotechnik sind Stimmen und Orchester perfekt ausbalanciert. Maria Callas’ überwältigendes Schallplattenvermächtnis wirkt umso beeindruckender, wenn man sich vergegenwärtigt, dass ihre Opernaufnahmen im Studio innerhalb von nur knapp zehn Jahren entstanden: Zwischen 1952 und 1960 verwirklichte die Sopranistin nicht weniger als 24 Aufnahmen (den Großteil davon zwischen 1953 und 1957), und später Carmen (1964) und eine zweite Tosca (1965) in ihrer neuen Heimat Paris. In der Geschichte der Musik gibt es, von der griechischen Sappho bis Kaija Saariaho, zahlreiche Komponistinnen, die der ausschließlich männlichen und oft sehr chauvinistischen Welt der Komponisten, die unsere Vorstellung und Wertschätzung der westlichen klassischen Musik geprägt haben, Nuancierungen hinzugefügt haben. Beethovens Fidelio - ein großes Abenteuer

Beethovens Oper Fidelio basiert auf einem Ereignis, das sich während der revolutionären Terrorherrschaft in Frankreich zugetragen hat (eine unerschrockene junge Frau versuchte, als Mann verkleidet, ihren in einem Verlies gefangenen Mann zu retten). Die Oper erlebte ein turbulentes Schicksal und wurde im Laufe der Jahre vielfach überarbeitet. Sie beweist einmal mehr das musikalische Genie des Komponisten, der hier ein Libretto vertonte, das seinen politischen Ansichten entsprach.
