Die im Jahre 1999 in Ohio gegründete Gruppe The National besteht aus Matt Berninger und den beiden Brüderpaaren Dessner und Devendorf. 2007 brachten sie eines ihrer bedeutendsten Alben heraus, das zugleich ihr viertes war: Boxer. Elf Jahre später kommen sie mit diesem Live-Album in Brüssel heraus, auf dem sie sämtliche Songs der Platte spielen. Ursprünglich war vorgesehen, diesen Mitschnitt nur als Vinylplatte beim Record Store Day anzubieten. Wegen der starken Nachfrage entschlossen sich The National jedoch auch für ein offizielles Release. Sie bleiben der ersten Version treu und wählen auch fast dieselbe Covergestaltung, auf der ein Foto von ihnen auf der Bühne mit der Hochzeitsszenerie des Produzenten Peter Katis zu sehen ist. Das Quintett bietet hier eine von A bis Z perfekte Darbietung für ein treues und reaktionsfreudiges Publikum. Der Opener ist Fake Empire. Eine kleine musikalische Heldentat, deren Strukturlosigkeit wir besonders schätzen, vor allem wenn die auf den Keyboards gespielte Popmelodie im Offbeat Assoziationen mit Berningers Stimme auslöst. Bei Brainy liegt die Alchemie dieser Perfektionisten klar auf der Hand, wenn Gitarren, Bässe und Drums harmonisch in einer Art musikalischen Diskussion interagieren. Bis zum letzten Titel Gospel wirkt es irgendwie hypnotisierend und verzaubernd, vor allem durch den Kontrast zwischen diesem dunklen Timbre und der unbeschwerten, lebhaften Melodie. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz
