Zwischen 1967 und 1979 hat Aretha Franklin ihre größten Alben für das Label Atlantic Records aufgenommen. Diese Alben sind vom Gospel ihrer Kindheit geprägt und definieren, eingehüllt in Rhythm’n’Blues, die Konturen des modernen Soul neu.

Neo-Soul in 10 Alben

Mitte der 90er Jahre, als der Hip-Hop sein goldenes Zeitalter erlebte, begann auch der Soul seine Revolution. Mit Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, Jill Scott und einigen anderen gewinnt das Genre die Klasse, Nüchternheit und Raffinesse zurück, die die Alben von Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield oder Roberta Flack belebt haben. Nach den Jahren der ultrakommerziellen sirupartigen R&B-Herrschaft belebt der Neo-Soul (oder auch Nu-Soul), der viel mehr Underground war, die Flamme des ursprünglichen Soul, in seinen Arrangements wie in seinen Texten. Eine kleine aber sehr einflussreiche Bewegung.

Curtis Mayfield ist ein Ästhet der Gitarre, der von Hendrix geliebt wird, ein Sänger mit einem verrückten Falsett, der von Prince verehrt wird, und ein hochkarätiger Songwriter, der Symphonien mit Funk, Gospel und Soul für die große Leinwand geschaffen hat. Zwanzig Jahre nach seinem Tod passt seine politisch engagierte Musik immer noch zu Amerika.
