Gibt es etwas Besseres als eine 4-CD-Box, um die Karriere eines zu früh dahingeschiedenen Künstlers zu verklären? Als Tom Petty 2017 plötzlich starb, brachen die Herzen aller echten Rock-Fans. Um sich damit abfinden zu können, machten sich seine Frau Dana und seine Tochter Adria daran, An American Treasure zu überarbeiten. Da er wahre Schätze an unveröffentlichten Stücken hinterlassen hatte, nahmen seine Verwandten und Freunde mit Unterstützung der Produzenten Ryan Ulyate, Mike Campbell und Benmont Tench (die Mitglieder seiner Gruppe) die Sache sehr ernst. Sozusagen eine familiäre Selektion mit Demos, Alternativen Takes von Albumtiteln oder auch Live-Mitschnitten, womit sich die Entwicklung des Masterminds der Heartbreakers abzeichnet. Outtakes aus dem Jahr 1976 (Surrender), dann Alternative Takes aus dem Jahr 1979 (Louisiana Rain) und das reicht hin bis zu Demos aus dem Jahr 1984 (The Apartment Song). Alles klingt sauber und sehr aussagekräftig und ist der sorgfältigen Remasterisierung durch Chris Bellman zu verdanken, der sich schon um die Aufnahmen von Diana Ross, Rick James und einigen anderen Motown-Künstlern gekümmert hatte. Es ist ein posthumes Werk mit 60 Titeln in Hi-Res 24-Bit-Qualität aus der Zeit, als Tom Petty bei den Heartbreakers startete, aber auch als er bei der Gruppe Mudcrutch spielte oder als Solist unterwegs war. Da es chronologisch aufgebaut ist, bildet das Live aus dem Jahre 2016, Hungry No More, den Abschluss dieser vierstündigen Anthologie. Ein emotionales Achterbahnfahren sowohl für die Fans als auch für die jüngeren Generationen, die einen wichtigen Künstler aus der amerikanischen Rockgeschichte entdecken wollen. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz

Gibt es etwas Besseres als eine 4-CD-Box, um die Karriere eines zu früh dahingeschiedenen Künstlers zu verklären? Als Tom Petty 2017 plötzlich starb, brachen die Herzen aller echten Rock-Fans. Um sich damit abfinden zu können, machten sich seine Frau Dana und seine Tochter Adria daran, An American Treasure zu überarbeiten. Da er wahre Schätze an unveröffentlichten Stücken hinterlassen hatte, nahmen seine Verwandten und Freunde mit Unterstützung der Produzenten Ryan Ulyate, Mike Campbell und Benmont Tench (die Mitglieder seiner Gruppe) die Sache sehr ernst. Sozusagen eine familiäre Selektion mit Demos, Alternativen Takes von Albumtiteln oder auch Live-Mitschnitten, womit sich die Entwicklung des Masterminds der Heartbreakers abzeichnet. Outtakes aus dem Jahr 1976 (Surrender), dann Alternative Takes aus dem Jahr 1979 (Louisiana Rain) und das reicht hin bis zu Demos aus dem Jahr 1984 (The Apartment Song). Alles klingt sauber und sehr aussagekräftig und ist der sorgfältigen Remasterisierung durch Chris Bellman zu verdanken, der sich schon um die Aufnahmen von Diana Ross, Rick James und einigen anderen Motown-Künstlern gekümmert hatte. Es ist ein posthumes Werk mit 60 Titeln in Hi-Res 24-Bit-Qualität aus der Zeit, als Tom Petty bei den Heartbreakers startete, aber auch als er bei der Gruppe Mudcrutch spielte oder als Solist unterwegs war. Da es chronologisch aufgebaut ist, bildet das Live aus dem Jahre 2016, Hungry No More, den Abschluss dieser vierstündigen Anthologie. Ein emotionales Achterbahnfahren sowohl für die Fans als auch für die jüngeren Generationen, die einen wichtigen Künstler aus der amerikanischen Rockgeschichte entdecken wollen. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz
