With Virus, their sixth studio album, British progressive metal group Haken complete the excellent Vector, released in 2018. The two records were originally conceived as a double album; some material was recorded at the time and set aside to mature before being released on Virus. The presence of the Cockroach King character, who was a feature on The Mountain (2013), can even make the records seem like a trilogy.

Here, the Londoners deliver a brutal but paradoxically accessible performance, something which is characteristic of the group. The controlled chaos, similar in style to Young Gods, sees heavy metal flirt with deathcore, alternative metal and some more pop/jazz atmospheres, with sudden outbursts that work nicely. We have rarely heard Haken make use of so many extreme metal elements, not to mention the numerous, almost inopportune, instrumental antics which take place, all of which can be overlooked due to the great skill of these Englishmen. Hats off to the band for their brilliant execution. The series of five tracks named Messiah Complex will undoubtedly stick in your memory due to both the technicality of the tracks and the quantity of references to the two previous albums. This new piece in the Hakenian puzzle is almost nostalgic, as it seems to close an important chapter in their vast mythology. We will be eagerly awaiting their next album. © Maxime Archambaud
