Siempre en el marco del cincuentenario de Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page ha tenido a bien editar una nueva versión de este doble live que, ciertamente, no había concitado la unanimidad general en su época. Ciertamente, en una ocasión anterior, en 2007, ya le había agregado no menos de seis piezas, entre ellas relecturas en directo de Black Dog, Heartbreaker y, sobre todo, una épica versión de Since I've Been Loving You, para muchos prefirible a la original. En conjunto, más de 34 minutos y 40 segundos de felicidad añadida. Pero, pese a tantas mejoras, cabía hacerse al conjunto el mismo reproche: incluso en Hi-Res Audio (¡al fin!) la escucha de The Song Remains the Same seguía siendo bastante frustrante en comparación con los álbumes de estudio. Editado en 1976 para acompañar el estreno del film de igual título estrenado con varios años de retraso, su sonido parecía un tanto desfasado en relación a los dos últimos trabajos de la banda, Physical Graffiti y Presence. Y a la vez omitía lamentablemente maravillas como la inmortal Kashmir, entre otras joyas. Una injusticia no reparada hasta la fecha, al dejarse de lado el Led Zeppelin DVD y Celebration Day, el primero al no contar con una versión exclusivamente en audio y el segundo porque fue grabado en 2007, sin la participación por tanto del llorado John Bonham.
Cuatro décadas más tarde todo eso parece de importancia secundaria. Para comprobarlo escúchense cronológicamente los cinco primeros álbumes en estudio, encadenando luego con How the West Was Won, continuando con The Complete BBC Sessions y finalizando con Celebration Day. Ese ese el orden correcto. Y adviértase igualmente que, pese a las duras críticas vertidas en la época, la calidad sonora de las tomas resulta excepcional. Los amantes de sus largas digresiones instrumentales, que atestiguaban el talento improvisador de Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones y John Bonham, disfrutarán como nunca gracias a su retocado sonido. ¿Cabrá esperar un The Song Remains The Same II.
