The Madrid four-piece Hinds treats albums like a magical time machine pinwheeling through decades: melding the '60s girl-group sounds with vibrant '80s breeziness and fuzzy, lo-fi '90s indie rock, for a thoroughly right-now urgency. "Riding Solo"—with its irresistible low-slung groove—and the delightfully off-kilter rhythm of "The Play" are like the best song the Breeders never made, while the chaotic nursery-rhyme "Just Like Kids (Miau)" has the bounce of Apples in Stereo and early Pavement. For the first time, the women of Hinds mix in their native Spanish; blended with the English lyrics of the Shangri-Las-esque "Boy" and dance-floor-ready "Good Bad Times," it's like a peek into singers' Carlotta Cosials and Ana García Perrote's secret thoughts. Spanish is also beautifully employed in the form of words and guitar for the romantic swoon that is "Come Back and Love Me." Meanwhile, the guitar on "Burn" and "Waiting for You" tap into that decidedly '90s style of being at once sunny and sad.
