Tanto en el jazz como en la música clásica, a menudo los resultados sobre el escenario son mejores que los obtenidos en estudio. Uno de los mejores discos de Nina Simone es un álbum en directo: It Is Finished. Y este The Montreux Years, una recopilación inédita de sus actuaciones en el famoso festival de jazz, se coloca de inmediato a su lado. Se pueden escuchar fragmentos de sus cinco conciertos en las orillas del lago Leman en 1968, 1976, 1981, 1987 y 1990, que gracias a la coherente calidad del sonido se combinan sin problema. 1968 marca la segunda vez que se celebra el festival y a la vez el inicio de una relación entre Nina Simone y Montreux que iba a durar mucho tiempo. Sólo más tarde, sobre todo a partir de 1976, su música comenzó a deslizarse hacia el extremo, en algún lugar entre la brisa inofensiva y el desahogo catártico. La gran sacerdotisa del soul Nina Simone se convirtió en una chamana, una bruja seductora que simplemente hacía lo que quería con la música y el público. Tanto en el terreno de las baladas personales como en el del afro-jazz en trance, ella siempre alcanza la cumbre y gobierna su música como una gran emperatriz.
