Telemann's 12 Fantasias for solo flute were composed around 1730. They are not extreme works in the vein of Bach's solo works for violin or cello, and they may have been intended as pieces designed to teach the concept of fantasy. Each is in multiple sections in a free form. They're attractive works that do have a certain spontaneity, but the real star here is the flutist, Ashley Solomon, and his collection of three period flutes, one made of wood (a 2004 copy of a 1750 instrument), one of porcelain, and one of ivory. The shades of tone among the three are fascinating indicators of what was available to a musician with money to spend in the middle of the 18th century, but even better is how Solomon plays them. There is not a bit of the whining uneven intonation so common in period flute and recorder performances. Instead, every note is weighed, considered, and precisely executed. You could sample almost anywhere, but the brief largo gesture at the beginning of the B minor fantasia, played on the granadilla wood flute, would be one place. Whatever their original intent, these are virtuoso works in Solomon's hands. Channel Classics' church acoustic is too big for what was certainly very intimate music, but it does not distort his achievement.
